"If you want to go deep, be deep" Hugh Milne, Founder of the Milne Institute

Visionary Craniosacral Work

What is Visionary Craniosacral Work?  Visionary Craniosacral Work (VCSW) was created by Hugh Milne, who combined his talents as an extremely gifted osteopath with his interest in Shamanism.  VCSW grew from his practice at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur.

Hugh Milne is a true living master of healing and perception, and also an incredibly gifted teacher.  Hugh transmits his extraordinary ability to his students---teaching us to use the tools of a Visionary.  In this energetic "finishing school," we learn to see with our "inner eye", to listen with our "inner ear", to allow our heart to guide and connect with our client's heart, to use our empathic sense to "feel" what the client feels---and to allow our healing hands to follow their intuition.

The motto of the school is to "to help create an open heart, a clear head and a free body."

The craniosacral system includes the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, the system of membranes inside the cranium, all 22 cranial bones, the spine and the sacrum.

What the Navajo call ‘the wind’s child,’ Genesis calls ‘the breath of life.’ It is a silent force, a field of chi, which blows through the craniosacral system, animates it, and infuses it with information and intelligence.

It is possible to listen to this field. The ability to do this is called ‘the heart of listening.’ (the title of Hugh Milne's extraordinary text)

A visionary knows how to touch a client with precise and gentle contacts that help the client feel more aligned, and more at home in themselves. Sometimes, by touching just the right place in just the right way, a visionary can help the client understand what troubles them, and what they need to reclaim their equanimity, and their place in life. Such work can also help the client access and release their healing potential.

A visionary is someone who can do four things equally well, and hold all four things as equal in importance. The four are:
  • First, they can perceive the entirety of the client's anatomy and physiology.
  • Second, can perceive the parts of their anatomy and physiology, and notice which parts have left concert with the whole.
  • Third, they can perceive the client's inner spiritual journey, emotional state and energy level, and hold no judgment about what they perceive.
  • Fourth, they can perceive their own inner spiritual journey, emotional state and energy level, also without judgment.

The visionary school takes its genesis from a pivotal event in the life of Sutherland.

In 1899 William Sutherland was studying in the first osteopathic school to be set up in the USA. It was founded in 1891 by the man who coined the term 'Osteopathy,' Andrew Taylor Still, in Kirksville, Missouri.

The path of Sutherland's professional development was forever changed by his witnessing of his mentor's gift of perception. Sutherland, the grandfather spirit of craniosacral work, was later to recount it this way:

Still was like the X-ray: He could look right through you and see things, and tell you things, without putting his hands upon the body. I have seen him do that! Time and time again. When some of the early teachers had a clinic up before class, hunting for the lesion, in would come the old Doctor from the rear,"Here's your lesion." How did he do it?
